The positioning of the People’s Republic of China among the world’s leading powers has greatly gained importance in 2013, with the implementation of the new development strategy of the Belt and Road Initiative. The subject of this paper is the analysis of China’s Belt and Road Initiative as a new model for establishing deeper relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Serbia. The intention of the authors is to present and emphasize the importance of the Initiative, as a globally comprehensive and most expensive project of today. The paper offers answers to the research questions: What are the benefits of the Republic of Serbia from participating in the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, as well as what benefits can the People’s Republic of China have from the expected development of the Republic of Serbia? The initial hypotheses support the fact that the Belt and Road Initiative contributes to the progress of regional economic integration with mutual benefits – to the initiator and, as well as the Republic of Serbia. Special attention is paid to the “16 + 1” cooperation mechanism, the analysis of which will highlight important elements of regional cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, with a special focus on the Republic of Serbia.
