Abstract

The policy of supporting families with children is a significant segment of social security systems in the European countries. Despite their focus on the different aims, these policies have in common the redefinition of existing measures and programs, especially taking into account new social risks and provoking demographic and economic changes. The subject of this paper is the response of family supporting policies to the rising poverty and social exclusion of children in the European context, with a special focus on the program of poor families support in the Republic of Serbia. This paper presents programs of child allowances in the countries of Europe, comparing characteristics and outcomes of these cash benefits with those in the Republic of Serbia. Findings indicate the need to reform current program of child allowances in the Republic of Serbia, with the possibility of implementing reform practices from Europe.
